South Western Railway (SWR) has launched its first-ever May Rail Sale – just the ticket for customers eager to swap expensive getaways for affordable breaks this half-term.
From Friday 8 until Monday 18 May, SWR is offering 40,000 discounted tickets to some of the most popular destinations across the South West for travel during the May half term period.
Customers can book discounted fares for travel between Saturday 23 and Sunday 31 May, with tickets available from just £6 each way. More details here.
The sale comes as new SWR research suggests Brits are increasingly embracing shorter, lower-cost UK breaks this half term. More than a than a third (34%) of respondents said lower costs were the main reason for choosing short UK trips, while others reported reduced travel time (33%), ease of planning (29%) and flexibility (24%).
The research also found that just over a quarter (26%) would consider replacing one overseas holiday with multiple UK trips instead.

From sandy beaches and harbour towns to cathedral cities and countryside escapes, SWR’s May Rail Sale includes some of the South West’s most popular leisure destinations.
Coastal favourites such as Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth are available from £12 each way, while history lovers can explore Winchester and Salisbury from £9.
Low prices are also available for journeys to the capital for sightseeing, shopping or a theatre trip - with the London Eye, South Bank and The Shard all just a short walk from Waterloo station.

Salisbury Cathedral
Separate analysis of respondents with children living at home suggests families are particularly focused on affordable and easy-to-plan UK breaks this year. Almost half (47%) said lower costs were driving decisions around short trips, while seaside and countryside destinations were the clear favourites among families. When asked about what they look for in a day trip, nearly two thirds (57%) said family-friendly activities, the most popular option in the survey.
In addition to these great savings, SWR customers can turn their trip into a treat by claiming an SWR Reward, which could include a discount on attractions like the London Eye and ZSL London Zoo, or a discounted lunch at restaurants including Gordon Ramsay’s Street Burger.
