Try the Train with our Community Ambassadors We're keen to make the railway accessible to all, especially helping individuals overcome the barrier of limited confidence.

Travel with confidence

Travel with confidence helps everyone to enjoy journeys by rail for both work and leisure. At South Western Railway (SWR) we are keen to make sure that everyone can become a confident rail user from planning a journey to ending a journey wherever the train takes them.

Why Travel with Confidence?

SWR have in-house expertise on encouraging people to use the train and can offer the support they need

Who can benefit from Travel with Confidence?

  • Inexperienced or nervous travellers who have barriers they need to overcome
  • Students from year 6 upwards who wish to become independent travellers
  • SEN schools and college students who may not have used the train before
  • Those with disabilities and/or accessibility needs, both Visible and Non-Visible
  • Job or education seekers who will be able to broaden their search for work
  • Non-English speakers. There are resources available to help people become more mobile
  • Groups who will benefit for their wellbeing – socialising and visiting somewhere new

In return for us inviting you to take trip we ask that you consider if the participants will then go on and become train travellers in the future (unfortunately we do not have the resources to use these trips purely as days out just for fun).

Things to Remember

There is plenty of information available on this website including images and resources.

  • To get the most out of the trip we ask for a minimum of four weeks’ notice
  • Journeys can only be planned on SWR trains
  • We run the trips on our off-peak services to give you a quieter and more comfortable journey
  • We recommend having smaller groups to get the most out of the trip (maximum 20) We cannot reserve a whole carriage but do our best to make sure everyone can sit together
  • You are responsible for safeguarding the group and doing a risk assessment to meet the requirements of your organisation. Please make sure that you bring enough members of staff to meet your safeguarding requirements
  • If trains are disrupted, we might have to change plans or cancel the event at short notice. We’ll always do our best to give you as much notice as we can.
  • Booking passenger assistance – we encourage you to book this for the trip and will help you. We recommend that you visit the station before booking a trip if you need to be sure that the station is accessible for all participants
  • If you need support we can put you in touch with our dedicated accessibility team that focuses on improving mobility, accessibility, and inclusion at SWR
