Whatever the time of year, there is always so much to see and do at the Watercress Line! With 10 miles of track and four beautiful stations to visit by steam or diesel train in the rolling Hampshire countryside.
Sit back, relax and travel through the heart of the English countryside. Whether you are taking a trip down memory lane or creating new ones, it’s the perfect way to unwind and experience the nostalgic sights, sounds and smells of steam travel from a bygone age.
Fares give you all day unlimited travel, so you can enjoy the slower pace of life as you explore each of the four period stations along the ten mile route, see behind the scenes in the engineering workshops and visit the nearby towns all on one ticket. Enjoy a delicious lunch, cream tea or slice of cake and a drink at our picturesque West Country Buffet at Alresford station. Get up close to our magnificent engines in the loco yard and find out more about our restoration projects in the viewing galleries or let the kids run wild on the play area while you enjoy a picnic at our picturesque Ropley station.
At the peaceful country station of Medstead and Four Marks, the highest station in Southern England, you can relax and watch the world go by. The steep gradient of the line to this station means the Watercress Line needs a fleet of large, powerful steam locomotives capable of hauling heavy trains ‘over the Alps’; a spectacular sight and sound at any time of year!
At the Alton end of the line you can also join the railway by mainline train, just an hour from London Waterloo. This bustling market town has a delightful mix of historic buildings and modern shops, with its own Curtis Museum and Allen Gallery and links to Jane Austen’s House Museum in nearby Chawton.
Throughout the year there are special events including a Day Out With Thomas, War on the Line and Steam Galas. There are popular pre-booked real ale and fine dining trains and pre-booked groups of 15 or more can enjoy a discounted journey with lunch or an afternoon cream tea on board.'
Explore the railway with 2 tickets for the price of one when you visit by train using South Western Railway! Travel by mainline railway to Alton station, walk over the bridge onto platform 3 and redeem your 2 for 1 offer at the Watercress Line ticket office.
