What happened

On the morning of Tuesday 7 July, a large fire broke out at an electrical substation between New Milton and Hinton Admiral.

Trains in this area are powered by a third rail which carries 750 volts of electricity. The fire caused significant damage to the equipment that supplies the third rail, as well as electrical control systems between the substation and our electrical control centre in Eastleigh.

DC module damage
Substation building damage
Wiring damage

The photos above show the significant damage within the substation building, to electrical equipment, and to wiring in the electrical control system.

What we are doing about it

Engineers will need to make the substation building safe before commissioning and testing new equipment, while also upgrading and repairing the power control system between New Milton and Eastleigh.

Engineers are working hard to fix the substation as quickly as possible, however, because access to the track is limited, and we need specialist equipment and electrical components that are in limited supply, we estimate that repairs may take months to complete.

We are still able to run trains by using alternative power supplies, but for safety reasons, the amount of power must be restricted. This affects the number of trains we can run in the same area at the same time.

Why we are making timetable changes

To continue to run the normal amount of train services we must make timetable adjustments.

We have developed a temporary timetable that is designed to allow trains to run normally between London Waterloo and Brockenhurst and keep changes to as small an area as possible.

Please check your journeys carefully using a journey planner, as trains will depart at different times and some calling patterns will change.
