What's going on
Due to a speed restriction because of high track temperatures, train services running across the whole South Western Railway network may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 20:00 14/08.
What we're doing about it
Hot weather and high rail temperatures this week means that there will be speed restrictions in place in several locations across our network between 12:00 and 20:00 every day until Sunday.
The speed limits for Saturday, and changes to the train service, include:
20mph speed limit between Fareham and Eastleigh
- Trains from Portsmouth Harbour to London Waterloo via Eastleigh will be delayed by around 20 minutes between Fareham and Eastleigh. They will not stop at Farnborough or Woking but will make an extra stop at Shawford.
- Trains travelling in the opposite direction will also be delayed by around 20 minutes between Eastleigh and Fareham, and will make an extra stop at Shawfor
20mph speed limit between Swanwick and Fareham
- This will delay trains travelling between Southampton Central and Portsmouth & Southsea by around five minutes.
60mph speed limit between Shawford and Swaythling
-
This will delay trains between Weymouth and London Waterloo by around five minutes. Freight trains through the area are subject to a more restrictive speed limit of 30mph due to the heavier weight of the trains. Some trains may be delayed by up to 15 minutes in the event of following a freight train through the speed limited area.
-
Stopping services between London Waterloo and Weymouth will not stop at Woking, and will terminate at Dorchester South instead of Weymouth. Some services that normally divide at Southampton Central will divide at Bournemouth instead.
-
Fast services between London Waterloo and Weymouth will not stop at Clapham Junction, and will make an extra stop at Upwey. Some trains will make extra stops at Totton, Ashurst, Sway, New Milton and Hinton Admiral.
60mph speed limit between Tisbury and Gillingham
- This will delay trains between Exeter and Salisbury by around five minutes.
60mph speed limit between Fleet and Basingstoke
-
This will delay all trains through the area by around five minutes, and will affect services between London Waterloo and Basingstoke, Weymouth, Portsmouth (via Eastleigh) and Salisbury.
60mph speed limit between Beaulieu Road and Pokesdown
- This will delay trains between Weymouth and London Waterloo by around ten minutes.
60mph speed limit on all lines between Wareham and Dorchester South
60mph speed limit between Dorchester South and Upwey
Services between London Waterloo and Portsmouth Harbour, and between London Waterloo and Weymouth may be delayed by up to 40 minutes in total.
Services between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids may be delayed by up to 10 minutes in total.
You should allow extra time for your journey. If you have an Advance ticket, you will be able to use this on the train departing before your booked one if you need to.
If you're travelling to the south coast this week, please check before you travel as rail temperatures are expected to be highest in this area.
