Better trains, faster journeys and simpler ticketing

Better trains

  • We’ll introduce brand new trains to the network, and will fully refurbish trains for the London-Portsmouth route to an as-new standard
  • Suburban routes will see a completely new fleet of 90 Bombardier trains
  • We’ll reduce the average age of the entire fleet by almost half by December 2020
  • We’ll significantly increase capacity, with 30% more peak seats into Waterloo every morning and evening than today’s trains – meaning 52,000 more seats a day across peak times at London Waterloo by December 2020

Faster journeys, more services

  • Mainline journey times will be reduced, with up to 14 minute reduction in Weymouth-London and Poole-London journey times
  • We’re introducing more services, and more frequent trains, including 400 more services on Sunday afternoons from 2018
  • We’ll double the number of trains each hour to Reading and Windsor (from 2 to 4)
  • We’ll improve late evening frequencies and run later last trains across the network
  • We’re making sure the South Coast is better connected, with 4 trains an hour between London and Portsmouth, and direct service along the South Coast providing a cross-Solent service for the first time in a century, connecting communities from Portsmouth to Weymouth

Simpler ticketing

  • We’ll make ticketing easier than ever by offering mobile phone barcode tickets (mTickets), available on the network for the first time, covering a wide range of journeys
  • We’ll introduce a smartcard scheme across the franchise including pay-as-you-go, with a ‘price promise’ guaranteeing you’ll pay the cheapest applicable single or day return fare
  • We’ll introduce value-for-money Advance tickets on new routes and new Advance tickets to London from 33 stations, giving at least 1.5m customers the opportunity to save money
  • We’ll offer flexible season tickets for part-time commuters, a recurring debit scheme so you can spread the cost of season tickets, and discounts for 16 to 18 year olds for the first time
  • We’re installing easier to use ticket machines
